Errata for Vintage Knits for Modern Babies

Hello there lovely knitters! I just want to update my blog as I have been out of touch for a while. I am so happy with the feedback you have given me about my knitting book Vintage Knits for Modern Babies. Thanks so much for taking the time to let me know how you are finding the patterns. There are a lot of you on Ravelry.com showing off your lovely baby knits. There have been some minor errata detected by keen eyes and so I am listing them here for you. I am sorry if these errors have inconvenienced you at all.

Errata for Vintage Knits for Modern Babies

Organic Heirloom Blanket (page 43) Under directions, after the "tip"
it reads CO 125 sts and it should read "CO 124 sts".

Matinee Jacket (page 27) - (Not Errata but helpful additional
instructions) add a note that says that the photo shows the size 6-12
months size and that the yoke is knit slightly differently on all 3
sizes to accommodate the seed stitch bands.

(page 27 under Materials it calls for 2 (1/2" [13mm]) shank buttons
but it should read "3 (1/2" [13mm]) shank buttons.

Angora Bolero (page 39) Materials should read 2(2,2,2) balls Sublime
Angora Merino.

Pixie Caps and a Giveaway

A few years back when I started designing knitting patterns I was most determined to find a simple and classic Pixie Cap to knit for my baby boy. The pixie cap is a style that totally embodies childhood with its impish peaked hood and face framing rim. As far as I'm concerned, a red Pixie Cap is just about the most classic hat a child can wear and my boys had one in every size and every color. Once I started playing around with designs I realized that pixie caps are really quite simple to knit and easy to master after one go. If you can knit and purl (and make a buttonhole) you can knit a pixie cap.

Every now and then I will get a lovely email from someone letting me know that they like one of my knitting patterns and they send me lovely photos. The pattern that I get the most emails about is the Pixie Cap pattern from my book and also the Tassel Pixie Cap pattern from my PDF pattern collection. Some of the people that email me also send photos and I wanted to share a few of them with you as they are too good to keep all to myself :)

Another cute Pixie Cap is a photo just sent to me this week by Liz who knitted the Vintage Pixie Cap from my book. Liz emailed me just to show me the red Pixie Cap she knit for her daughter and she was especially thrilled because she is new to knitting and found the pattern quite easy and do-able because there are no decreases or increases.

Ecobaby Yarn

This week I came across the new Ecobaby Organic Cotton Yarn from Debbie Bliss which sadly, has not yet hit our shores down here in NZ. This yarn looks beautiful and is manufactured from 100% organic, fairtrade cotton within an ecologically and socially conscious process through the Bio Re textile chain, which integrates farmers, their families and the textile industry as equal partners. The yarn is dyed with non toxic dyes in recyclable water, giving a palette of 16 gorgeous shades making it perfect for all manner of baby knitting projects.

I can't wait to get my hands on it as I love the texture and drape of cotton for some patterns like the Wavy Cashmere Blanket from my book. I am very happy that more designers are working with Organic yarns and dyes especially for baby knitting. I plan to use the Eco baby to re-work a few vintage patterns I have in my collection and I hope to share them with you later this season.

Welcome back readers! The kids are back to school after a very long break and I am gearing up for a very exciting year as the proprieter of Shescrafty Knits as well working on a few fun projects. My plan for this year is to use my blog as more of an online style notebook for children's knitting as well as offering other inspirations I find along the way... things I think you would like as well.

Many of you may know, my family and I had the opportunity to travel from New Zealand (where we have been living for 8 years) to New York last September. We spend 4 months being New Yorkers and it was quite an exciting time for us as we were completely inspired by all the creative energy around us. The trip co-incided with the launch of my new knitting pattern book Vintage Knits for Modern Babies and so it was a very exciting time for me. I was able to meet some lovely people when I did book signings which turns out to be a great way to find out more about my customers. I learned a lot about new yarns and was hugely inspired by NY fashion.

One of my favorite things to do in NY was searching for inspiration for new designs. I was so in awe of the beautiful children's shops in Brooklyn and Manhattan; Acorn on Atlantic Ave in Brooklyn with it's beautiful toys and hand knitted baby wear. The baby section at ABC Home and Carpet on Union Square. The baby department at Takashimaya on 5th Ave and the insanely expensive kids styles at the Japanese Trico Field in Soho. Yes, I have no shortage of inspirations and so now it is time to get to work designing planning and oh yes...knitting!

New York as we all know is home to some of the worlds best yarn stores and so I also made it my mission to check out as many as I could. My local shop, Brooklyn General stocks many of my favorites and lots of beautiful new yarns I had never seen or heard of. I like to design with yarn that is practical, versatile as well as beautiful so I brought back bag loads of scrumptious yarns that beg to be designed with.

It was a wonderful trip and I can't wait to work on some new patterns and designs with New York in mind. In the meantime, please follow me on Twitter for more updates...

My family and I have spent the last 4 glorious and amazing months living and working in Brooklyn NY and our time here is coming to an end. Usually I sell my hand knitted baby designs in my Etsy store and I am sure I have let a few people down this season as I am taking a break while in NY. Free Girls Petite Beret Pattern

When I began Shescrafty Knits over 7 years ago I was selling knitted baby hats, cardigans and booties that were hand knitted by my fine group of knitters here in New Zealand. One of the of the most popular hats was the Petite Beret which is now included in my baby pattern book Vintage Knits for Modern Babies. We have knit this cap in hundreds of color combinations over the years and the possibilities are endless. Since the Petite Beret pattern in my book go up to age 3, I thought I would include the pattern here for ages 4-8 years for those of you who's girls are growing up before your eyes.

Girls Petite Beret (ages 4-8)

Size

To fit girls age 4-8 years

Materials
*50g Ball of Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino or other DK/semi worsted yarn.

*Yarn of choice for i-cord (fingering/4ply works best)

*1 Pair US 3 (3.25mm)knitting needles.
*1 Pair US 5 (3.75mm) knitting needles.
*2 double pointed needles US 5 (3.75mm)

Gauge

24sts and 32 rows to 4” (10cm) on larger needles in st st.

Cap

Using smaller needles, CO 90 sts loosley.

Work 8 rows in K1, P1 rib.

Change to 3.75mm (US 5) needles.

Next row: *(K1, inc) 15x; (k2, inc) 7x; k1 rep from * to end (156 sts).

Next Row: Purl

Work eyelet row as follows: K4, *yo, k2tog, k2, rep from * to end

Next Row: Purl

Work 14 rows of st st.

Shape Crown

1st row: K1, *K15, K2tog, rep from * to last 2 sts, k2

2nd and alt rows: P

3rd row: K1, *K14, K2tog, rep from * to last 2 sts, k2

5th row: K1, *K13, K2tog, rep from * to last 2 sts, k2

7th row: K1, *K12, K2tog, rep from * to last 2 sts, k2

Continue to decrease in this way on every following alt row until 21 sts remain.

Next row: Purl

Next Row: K1, K2tog 10 times.

Thread wool through remaining 11 sts and fasten off securely.

Make i-Cord

CO 3 sts using double pointed needles.

Knit, don't turn.

Slip the sts back to the beginning of the needle and k the row again.

Continue in this manner until you have a short length of knitting, pull down on the cord and the gap at the back will close.

Continue until the cord is the 30” (76cm).

Thread the yarn through the sts and pull firmly.

Finishing

Press fabric according to instructions on ball. Using back stitch, join seam.

Starting at the side towards the front, weave i-cord through eyelets and tie a bow at open end.

Magpie Patterns

As the cooler Autumn temps are settling in on us here in New York, I am suddenly itching to knit and I have about a years worth of knitting projects in the queue. (just as well because I am in the midst of an almost perpetual winter since leaving the Southern Hemisphere for the Northern).

I have been browsing the book shops and knitting stores here in New York and I realize there is no shortage of patterns and projects but for me it has been an overwhelming experience. When I get overwhelmed, I run home and log onto Ravelry.com to help me figure out which pattern is best. Ravelry is great but still, there is a lot to weed through.

Then along came Magpie Patterns which has a lovely (and growing) selection of independent needlework patterns including knitting, crochet, embroidery and sewing all displayed by the well curated eye of its owner. In addition to individual patterns there is a beautiful selection of all my favorite craft books as well.

Over the years I have had many requests for a baby cardigan pattern that is knit all-in-one piece. I finally found one on Magpie Knits! Manda Ruth, a little hooded cardigan by Jane Richmond, is knit from the top down and is virtually seamless. Seed stitch adds texture to this raglan sweater and worsted weight yarn makes this project fly off the needles. How cute?

Pilgrimage to Brooklyn General

While we are in NY for 4 months, my 6 year old son is not starting school here because he just finished Montessori school in New Zealand and the new school year starts in Feb there. Jasper is not very good with new things, so we decided he would stay home with me for the 4 months and I would get a babysitter 2 days a week so I can get some work done (and shopping). So yesterday on one of my babysitter days I was determined to check out another yarn shop. So far I have been a little underwhelmed when I visited Purl Soho (great yarns but too cramped and no room to play) and my local Knit-A-Way (decent selection but too blah and uninspiring). I really wanted to find a yarn store that would make me weak in the knees and inspire me to create (and part with my Visa). Well my good friends, I have found all these things and more at Brooklyn General in Red Hook.

I apologize for my crappy photos but my camera broke and I am left taking photos with my iphone until it is replaced. It is well worth noting that the Hodge Podge Farm Blog has better pictures that are worth checking out as the Brooklyn General website doesn't give you the real impression of the amazing fiber on display and the exquisite selection of fabrics and books.

I only had a limited amount of time in the shop but the super friendly gal behind the counter was all too helpful giving me a little tour of the yarns she is most fond of. Since I live in New Zealand which would you believe has the worst yarn stores in the world (don't get me started!), coming to Brooklyn General I felt like a pilgrim that finally reached the shrine. The store itself is just bursting with color and texture not only from the products but the old wooden shelving that was part of the original General Store it had been before the knitters moved in. The store stocks only high quality natural fiber yarns which are chosen by color, feel and apparently smell. I love that. I was completely overwhelmed with all the varieties of small batch kettle dyed wools, crazy felted yarn from Germany and luscious sock yarns, super bulky merino dyed in candy colors. I ended up buying 4 skeins of Malabrigio Chunky Merino in Paris Night which is a kettle dyed deep dark midnight blue with hints of deep purple throughout. Oh dear, I am in love with this yarn and have big plans to knit Emory a chill choker (now on the needles) and my Mom one of my Wellington Southerly Cowls for her birthday.

This weekend there is the Sheep and Wool Festival in Rinebeck NY. Everyone who knits is going to Rinebeck except me, bummer. Lately I am not into conventions or large gatherings of any kind. Perhaps I burnt out at the Polymer Clay convention back in 97, I dunno. Maybe it was all those years selling my jewelry at craft fairs in California or the Bead conventions in Santa Fe. But I am sure if I went to Rinebeck I would be blown away with the selection of yarns, vendors and of course sheep. Something I do get plenty of in New Zealand :)

Sorry for such a long time between posts but I have moved myself and my family from New Zealand to Brooklyn NY for 4 months. We have finally found our feet and are enjoying all the thrills and ills that NY is famous for. Not much has changed in NY since I was last here 10 years ago. In fact, I am amazed how little ever changes here. In some ways I feel like the East Coast of the US is frozen in time and I have a hunch that people like it that way. Fashions come and go and people jump on board in one way or another until they have had enough and then they toss it aside like yesterdays news. The revival of Knitting was of those trends that got it's start in NY. In Manhattan alone there are at least 10 knitting stores and last week I went exploring in Soho to visit one of my favorites : Purl.

Wow, just walking up to the store front was a magical moment for me. I have always loved the color of the storefront and the beautiful details of the shop itself and in person there were so many more details to admire like the original mosaic tile floor and beautiful NY style details in the wood work and door frame. I was also surprised to see just how small the store is in person. There were 3 employees, and maybe 4 customers and there was nowhere to move! I felt a little overwhelmed by the selection of yarns and ended up not buying anything but planning on returning for a ball of the Jade Saphire 12 ply Cashmere ($42 a skein) as soon as I can think of a project that only needs one skein. That yarn is amazing! I think Purl is such a success because of the way the yarns are displayed like they are objects to be coveted. Each little cubby overflowing with rare gems glimmering and calling to you to admire them. It was hard to resist not pulling out all the skeins and rolling around on them which is what I really wanted to do.

After visiting Purl, I walked over to The Point Knitting Cafe which sadly has closed down. This was just the beginning of a trend that I am sensing : knitting has had it's day as a trend and is returning to it's roots as a craft with longevity. Knitting is not a flash in the pan trend, it is a life long journey in which your skills improve as you work to create useful and beautiful garments that are treasures. Ok, maybe we will see a few less ipod coseys around the hood but the rest of us will keep knitting weather it be only sometimes. And, we need good knitting stores to make our projects sing!

On the subway ride home, I noticed a middle aged woman who brought our her crochet and began to work some rows on a egg yellow acrylic baby sweater. I have never understood why people use acrylic when they are going to the trouble to knit something with their blood, sweat and tears shouldn't it be a work of art made of beautiful yarn?

Some exciting changes are happening around here as my family and I are coming to New York for 4 months this Fall! I will have a few samples from Vintage Knits for Modern Babies on display as well as copies of my Shescrafty Baby Patterns available including my new Madamoiselle Beret and Baby Fingerless Mittens.

I am over the moon looking forward to checking out my favorite knitting shops and buying up lots of yarn I can't get easily in New Zealand. I would love to hear your favorite knitting spots so I don't miss anything!

Mademoiselle Beret Knitting Pattern

In my Etsy shop I sell the Petite Beret which is the girls version of this cap knit with New Zealand Merino wool in many different colors. This cap has been very popular in part because it is quite girly and sophisticated, very comfortable and because it's one-size-fits-all designs means kids can use it for 3-4 years without growing out of it. If you would like to knit The Petite Beret pattern, it is included in my upcoming book Vintage Knits for Modern Babies. (see photo below)

Over the years I have knit this cap in a womens size for friends and family using RYC Cashsoft DK, Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK, Sublime Angora Merino and my personal favorite Suri Merino in Twilight from Blue Sky Alpacas. Alpaca is one of my favorite fibers as it is very soft, lightweight and incredily warm making it a great choice for a winter hat. In New Zealand there isn't a lot of Alpaca around but I did get some Blue Sky Alpacas from South Seas Knitting to make this cap (see photo above). If you plan to knit this cap, don't be shy about using your favorite semi-worsted or DK weight yarn and play around with different colors and yarn weights for the adjustable i-cord. This is a very fun and versitile cap that fits all sizes making it a great gift. You can knit one for yourself, and one for a small person!

Cap with Kitty Ears Pattern

One of my favorite vintage patterns is from a beautiful Bernat Handicrafter booklet I picked up on Ebay. These Bernat booklets are filled with muted kodachrome colors and packed with classic designs, some of which are knit with a fairly chunky Bernat yarn. I wanted to knit up this wee Cap with Kitty Ears perfectly matched to the pale grey Zara Plus merino that was lonely in my stash. As I was knitting I came across many outdated terms and had to rip out my work about 3 times until I got it figured out. Once I got the pattern sorted it was really quick and easy to knit up and the yarn is so lovely and soft it makes the perfect quick baby gift. I wanted to share the pattern with you and so I have changed and updated it for modern knitters.

2 50g balls of Zara Plus extra fine merino in Shade 27

Tapestry Needle

One Button

Crochet Hook for making button loop

Needle Size
One pair US 5 (3.75mm) knitting needles.

One pair US 8 (5mm) knitting needles.

Gauge

5 stitches per inch

Abbreviations
Pretty standard abbreiviations with the exception of KRL = Knit Right Loop. Insert right needle into right loop of stitch just below next stitch; place it onto left needle and knit it; then knit the stitch on needle. For video help click here.

Cap

Using US 5 (3.75mm) needles, CO 60 sts.

Work 8 rows in K1, P1 rib. Inc 1 st at end of last row. – 61 sts.

Change to 5mm (US 8) needles.

Row 1: K22, put a marker on needle, P1, K1 in moss stitch for 17 sts and put a marker on needle, K22 sts.

Row 2: P22, work next 17 sts in moss st, P22 sts. Keeping the 17 sts between markers in moss st and remaining sts in stocking stitch, work evenly until piece measures 2 ½ inches, ending with a WS row

Shape Ears

KRL = insert right needle into right loop of stitch just below next stitch; place it onto left needle and knit it; then knit the stitch on needle. For video help click here.

Row 1: knit to first stitch before next marker, KRL, k1, KRL, p1, work in moss stitch to 1 st before next marker, p1 tbl of next st in row below, k1, KRL, k1, k to end of row. – 1 st increased on each side of both markers.(move stitch markers to keep 17 sts moss stitch in center.

Row: P 24, work center 17 sts in moss st, P 24.

NOTE: all increases are made by knitting through back of loop of next st in row below, being sure to keep all increased sts in stocking st.

Row 3: *K to 1st st before next marker, inc 1 st on each side of marker, k1, work center 17 sts in moss stitch, inc one stitch on each side of next marker, k to end of row.

Row 4: P 26, work center 17 stitches in moss stitch, P26.

Keeping the center 17 sts in moss stitch and rem sts in st st, cont to inc 1 st on each side of each marker on every other row 8 times more, ending with a WS row.

Shape Back

At the beginning of each of the next 2 rows BO 42 sts. Continue in moss st on rem 17 sts until piece is same length as bound off edges. BO.

Neck Band

Using US 5 (3.75mm) needles, CO 15 sts for chin strap. On same needle with RSF, pick up 58 sts around lower edge of cap. K1, P1 in ribbing for 1 inch. BO.

Finishing

Sew back seams. Crochet a button loop at the end of chin strap. Sew button on chinstrap.

My publisher, Ten Speed Press, just sent me a sneak peek at the fall 09 catalog and I have to say it is pretty exciting to see my knitting book featured inside. After a year of work, it is a great feeling to see the book in the final form. Vintage Knits for Modern Babies features 25 heirloom-quality patterns simplified for modern knitters. Poppytalk is a curated monthly online street market that showcases handmade goods of emerging design talent from around the world. It's like my dream craft market that we don't have in Wellington and it's just as well that most of the sellers ship to New Zealand. Some absolutely beautiful hand made goods and vintage treats for every budget many which are one offs so be sure to snatch up something you see quickly. There are amazing textile jewelry pieces from kjoo, fun vintage inspired bags and tea towels from showpony and my personal fave, hand crafted measuring spoons with little birds from beehive kitchenware. Vintage Patterns

Wow, I have been away for quite a while! Yes, indeed, I have had a wonderful summer and a great big break from all things baby knitting however, it is time to get back into the knitting! Over the summer I have collected quite a few new vintage knitting pattern booklets for my ever growing collection. One of my faves is the one my husband gave me for xmas this year called the Beehive Baby Book. Yes, there are several, nay, dozens if not hundreds of Beehive Baby Books out there (and believe me I have a few of them) but this one is extra special as it has some pretty lovely graphics and color illustrations for me to fawn over. Just the font on the cover is enough to make me giddy with delight (yes, I have problems).

Now that the book is well on it's way to being printed, I can take a little time and finally play around with some of these beautiful vintage baby patterns. So, for the next few weeks I have decided to devote myself to knitting some of the beautiful patterns I have collected over the years and you can find the finnished peices in my etsy shop starting today.

There is only one size and color of each pattern available as this is a one offI loved one little cardigan pattern in perticular called "In the Modern Manner" (above) which sold me with the catchy tag line "grown-up cardigans are worn by all the best babies". And, seeing as how the good olde cardi is all the rage this year, I figured they were right.

Here is the "Modern Cardigan" (funny to think that once cardigns were "modern") This pattern made an adorable little sweater for newborns to 3 mos and I had it knit in a lovely pure merino 3ply in ivory. Just like the photo from the 50's.

Also in the Beehive Baby Book are some really funny photos as below...I think there should be more photos like this in knitting pattern books! I always think, where is this person today?

I am feeling a bit giddy this week because we have almost finished the photo shoot for Vintage Knits for Modern Babies and I have handed in my manuscript including 25 knitting patterns - including a Layette Set, Organic Heirloom Blanket, Matinee Jacket, Ruby Slippers, Modern Baby Bonnet, Double Breasted Car Coat, Petite Beret, Charming Sweater, Cable Boots, Wavy Cashmere Blanket, Nana's Bunnies, Birdy Cardigan, Pixie Cap, Wee Mittens, Anya's Cardigan, Ballet Blossom Cardigan, Lavender Sachet, Baby Clothes Hangers, Hooded Capelet and last but not least...the Bunny Mobile. PHEW!

Early on in the concept stage, someone at the publisher said they would like to see a baby mobile in the book. 12 months ago this sounded like a fun idea so I made some sketches and kept putting it off until finally everything was completed except the blasted mobile. Well, after 20 hours of toil, my bunny mobile is complete and off to the Photographer in California. It was way more fun to make than I thought and as I was making it, I realized that there are so many ways you could take this pattern different. In the end, I wanted to keep it simple and this was the result.

Hooded Baby Capelet Pattern

Many of the 25 knitting patterns in my upcoming book were already in my head before I even started planning the book. Mostly all of my inspiration comes from my vintage knitting pattern collection. When I was planning out the patterns for the book I knew I wanted to include a baby cape or capelet. I have seen many lovely capes ranging from a long carrying cape to short little caplelets that are almost glorified collars. What I was really after was a fairy tale cape, the sort that Little Red Riding Hood would wear.

I found designing this pattern was a bit of a challenge for me because I was not sure how to approach it. Do I want it short and sweet, patterned or plain? Eventually I came across this Japeneese pattern and I was totally inspired to keep it simple (i.e. no teddy bear ears)...
After many trials and tweaks, I ended up with a pattern I call Hooded Baby Capelet. I think it is my favorite in the book and I so wish I had a little girl to knit one for. The pattern is streight forward, easy to knit and uses the most incredibly soft Rowan Cashsoft Baby DK. The best part about it is that it is insanely cute when worn. Just the kind of pattern I like to make. (The photo I took is pretty bad as lighting was low but I had to send the cape off to the Photographer today.) I can't wait to see the pictures of the model wearing the cape for the book!

Who taught you to knit?

I remember pretty clearly learning to knit with my mom. We would spend weekends down-the-shore in Long Beach Island, New Jersey during Sept/Oct weekends. All my memories of these weekends involved board games and some sort of craft. My mom worked full time and her idea of craft meant a really fun kit of some kind (think Pot-Holder Loops). My mom did not knit but something must have inspired her to get some red white and blue yarn (duh, it was 1976) and make me the most god awful sweater you can imagine. I must have liked it too because I wore it to my school picture day to have it immortalized.

During this patriotic sweater making time, my mom taught me to knit. I didn't really take to it but always wished I had. It was only in my mid twenties that I picked up the needles again and like riding a bicycle, it all came back to me, however slowly.

Do you remember learning to knit? Maybe you were taught at school, or by a member of your family? Perhaps you learned to knit later in life? Did you find it easy or a struggle? Tell me your stories about how you learned to knit.

All I think about and all I do is work on the book these days. It continues to be highly enjoyable and with the deadline looming in October, I am thinking about what's next for me. I am already thinking about a huge hole in the knitting pattern market for Childrens Patterns (4-10yrs). It seems as though there is not much out there designed for this age group. Having kids this age I know that it is almost impossible to find anything decent to knit them. The things I have found are either highly impracticle (Rowan) or seriously dorky. If you have any recommendations for knitting patterns please let me know.

I have been churning out patterns at record pace and I am really happy with the designs. Some are still being finished but these in the photo are ready to go. The final colors in the book will all be different than the ones shown in the pix. I am taking some more photos today of the next batch of knits completed and hope to have them up by the end of the week. (I am fighting a bit of a cold so we will see how I go).

Anya's Cardigan

The cardigan that started it all. About 9 years ago when my first sonny was a little babe, I had a friend who had a little girl named Anya and they would often come over to play. Almost every time I saw little Anya, she wore a beautiful hand knitted cardigan over a white t-shirt. It was such a simple and classic look but these days when babies are wearing little adult clothes, it really stood out to wear something so retro and vintage and...babyish. I asked my friend where she got the lovely cardigans and it turns out they were knit for her when she was a baby and she had kept them all those years waiting to give them to her own babies.

Something must have sparked within me that day because I have wanted to make this lovely vintage cardigan ever since. I am so happy to have worked on this pattern for my book and I hope that it is well enjoyed by many.

New Ruby Slippers Pattern

I think I am almost done with these little cuties! I have knit them in a latte color Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK because it is what I had on hand. Now I am knitting them in a lovely red color Cashmerino and I think they are going to look very vintage. I have always had a thing for little red baby shoes. A big huge THANKS to all the test knitters who are working away at the patterns to give me their feedback. This is a huge help as I would like these patterns to be streight forward and well tested. I will have a few more patterns available for testing in the next few weeks - Angora Bolero, Wee Mittens, Anya's Cardigan, Cropped Layette Jacket and Layette Booties. As the deadline for my pattern book closes in on me, I am beginning to see some of my designs come to life. I have about 12 patterns "in the can" and 12 more I am stressing about. Stressing is ok though as it lites a fire in me to get cracking! It is all coming together and has been an insane amount of fun for me. Seriously, it should be illegal how much fun I am having.

Here you can see one of the patterns in development: Tweet Tweet Cardigan. Because I want to use semi-worsted weight yarn, it is quite hard to get the details on the birds to look "birdlike" and not like airplanes. We will get there eventually! With so many feminine patterns in my book I wanted to do a little something for the new age sensitive male babies out there so I hope you would knit this for a boy?

New Batch of Pixie Caps

I have been working on a new Pixie Cap Pattern for the book and could not resist the idea of using fabric covered buttons to test out the design. This week I have put together an order for local favorite store Madame Fancy Pants and I finally found a use for my stash of Amy Butler Fabric for the buttons. (I knew there was a reason I bought it!) I have also made a batch of caps for etsy with buttons covered with my favorite Duck fabric from Minnie Muu. It can be quite hard to find fabric with motifs small enough to fit on a button! I have also added to etsy some knit Pixie Caps with lovely pink vintage buttons from my grandmothers amazing collection. There is only one cap in each size available so be quick to avoid disappointment!

I got inspired with a new score of vintage knitting needles and buttons and put together some little knitting kits for those of you who like to knit your own. Just got my first order of Treliske Organic Brown Merino in the Post today and I am looking forward to getting some Cardigans, Caps and Booties Knit before they run out. Apparently the dark brown merino is very hard to come by which is why it has been kinda hard for me to source a nice chocolate brown merino for the past few years. Spun entirely from Treliske's coloured Merino flock, this soft undyed Organic Wool is so perfect for baby clothes because it is a natural product with it's lanolin intact which makes it exceptionally soft. Now to decide what to knit....

Knitting Pattern Book : Baby Bonnet

Finally signed the contract last week to write my first published knitting pattern book! I have not been this excited about anything for a long time. Designing baby knits has been a passion for the last 6 years and I now get to design 25 patterns for babies and toddlers - and they will pay me! Pinch me!

The idea is to take vintage designs and update them for modern knitters. I want these knits to be easy enough for your beginner and intermediate knitter (like me). I have so many designs going through my head and I can't wait to see them knit up and play around with all my favorite yarns! I am planning to post my work in progress up until the manuscript is due in November.

Very happy about working with a new online shop Tiny McSmall. It seems like there is a new uber cool kid store opening every week on the web but Tiny McSmall is my newest favorite because owner and mom Leah O'Connell has gathered all my favorite designers in one collection : Flora and Henri, Erica Tanov, Oeuf, and some amazing boys shirts by Neige. As for the girls, it makes me want to break down and cry that I don't have a girl to buy these dresses for. As if the clothes aren't amazing enough there are lovely little gifts, party invitations, dress-ups and even crafty kits and books.

Wanted: knitting memories

I have been busy the last few weeks putting together a book proposal to a publisher in California! Woo Hoo! I can not even define how excited I am about the idea for a knitting pattern book and I am already cracking away on some designs that *almost* make me want to have another baby. It is so much fun!

Part of my book will include quotes and stories from women who recall their earliest memories of knitting. I would like to capture some of these stories from your mother and her mother so I can document the changes knitting has gone through in the last few generations. To do this, I need YOU!

Do you have a knitting Grandmother? Where did she get her yarn? What did she knit? Did you save any of her creations to pass down to your family? Are there photos of her knitting? Why does she love knitting? I want to hear from her (or you can tell me her story).

All contributions will be considered for publication in the book. Please send me your submissions via email or post to this blog. Time is of the essence!

etsy baby goodness

I spent some time (too much) this week finding some lovely little items for baby gifts on etsy. There are so many items on etsy and it can take a really long time to find the good stuff. I love the fact that everything is always changing on etsy. With my knits, I have a few pieces for sale that I will never make again because some of the yarns are made in small batches. That is what makes it so fun for me. I can design and create lots of one of a kind items and it all just adds to the market style of etsy - if you see something you love, you have to get it then and there because it may not be back again.

Photographic Friends

Over the years I have been lucky to have many friends and relatives who are amazing photographers and they are responsible for the photos on my website. (All the bad photos were taken my me!). It all started way back circa 1999 when I had my first son Emory. We were living in Emeryville Ca, outside San Francisco, and our mutual landlord introduced me to Angela Lang. Angela has an amazing eye and her photos of kids and babies capture every swirl of hair, every chubby fat roll, and every eyelash. I just knew I wanted her to do my very first photos when I started Shescrafty in 2001. Since moving to Wellington, it hasn't been so easy to do photos over 6000 miles so unfortunately, we haven't worked together in a few years.

Lucky for me, my Mother in Law, Helena moved to Wellington shortly after and she was able to practice her Photographic skills on new baby Jasper. Helena and I had many fun afternoons posing Jasper in my knitwear and taking photos. I can't believe that he was ever this little!

Shortly after Jasper grew out of being a model, my good friend Tannya (who makes my printed patterns look pretty) introduced me to Virginia Woods-Jack and it is pretty lucky that V has 2 gorgeous girls who are the perfect models. Virginia takes amazing photos that I can't get enough of.

I am so very much excited about these booties - they are really really really cute and I finally got to make my fabric buttons for something! Yey! I was thinking of using vintage buttons but they are hard to find in pairs - anyway, I have a new excuse to buy fabric (if only for the 2cm circle I will use for each button). This is based on a vintage patten I found but it needed to be revamped. I hope I can add this pattern to my booklets soon. But now it needs testing...

I am gearing up for tomorrows big Craft 2.0 Sale. I am very excited because I don't usually sell directly and I love doing these kinds of things. I have lots of new things on the table and it should be lots of fun.

A week ago my friend and I did a photo shoot with her 2 girls and my new pattern the Petite Beret. I think the shots came out really well and I'm looking forward to using them for the new pattern - hopefully in issue 3. The shots were taken in Island Bay in Wellington around the corner from my friends house. I love this view because beyond the small island in the distance, lies the cold southern ocean and Antarctica. And believe me, during a southerly, it feels like it is closer than it is.

One of my very best, oldest friends has just had her very first baby, a girl, Dalia. This is the very first baby from this set of friends and I don't have words to describe how excited I am. I just wish she wasn't 6000 miles away from California. The very second I heard that Lauren was going to have a baby I whipped out my NZ organic merino wool yarn and my circular needles and I searched for a pattern. As this was my first blanket I was looking for a simple pattern and I found the perfect one in Knitting for Baby. Basically, the pattern is knit diagonally like a shawl. Increasing at the beginning of each row until it was long enough to keep a baby warm and then decreasing on the down slope. Presto - 10 (cough) months later the blanket is 99.9999% there! It has a cute little eyelet trim around it too. I was going to crochet a pale pink around the edge but since the baby is born and all, I better put it in the mail. I just wish I had the time to do some embroidery on it like MANTA DE BÉBÉ BEM QUENTINHA! VERY WARM BABY BLANKET!. As I get to the very last rows of this blanket I am feeling a bit lonely because I enjoyed the ease of this project so much. I need to find another super easy pattern I can knit while watching TV during the long dark southern winter.

Just married, 10 years ago! It was a fine April 1st, 1997 that we went off to City Hall in San Francisco to tie the knot. In our young, foolhardy naivete, we planned it too late and had to ring around the city to find ANYONE that could legally marry us. We were leaving for our trip to Europe at the end of April and we needed to be legal before we had the ceremony in Prague. Luck was on our side, and we found a lovely Minister who invited us to his home in San Rafael. It turned out to be one of the most beautiful and spiritual days of our lives. It really seems like yesterday but at the same time so much has changed. I really miss Mt. Tam as it was a very special place for Philip and I. We would climb to the top on summer nights and watch the fog roll over San Francisco. I feel so lucky to have shared so many adventures with this man.

It started a while back when I designed some knit and crochet broaches for a friends store. All I can think about now, is broaches. I have been realizing that I have an inner need to limit myself into one susinct niche because there are just too many distractions for me in this world. Durning a late night power browsing broach quest, I came accross Heather Baily's Couch Flower tutorial. Since then I am making broaches as if they held the answers to the worlds problems. Making them brings me a freakish level of serenity, even though they have no place to go, no people to see. It is all part of my "making things and not selling them" plan for 2007.

Maranui and Heidi Meet

Many of you already know Heidi and some of you remember me telling you about my vegetarian food writer friend that came to visit us from San Francisco last December. One of the highlights of their trip to Wellington was a visit to Maranui Surf Club on a rare "fine" day. I remember Heidi took about 180 photos of the chick pea salad she ordered. I have been waiting since that day for her to come up with a recipe of those amazing salads. Lucky for me (and you!) I found her post just today. Also, Heidi's new cookbook has hit the stands and it really looks amazing. I can't wait to get my signed copy (cough cough).

Back in the saddle

Well, here we go again. I started this blog in, um, July of last year for goodness sake. I am a pathetic excuse for a blogger. 8 months later I have been struck with inspiration once again. I have made some changes this year to shescrafty.com and the big idea now is that I have no time to run a business that requires 100% of my time and energy. I would love to do it if I didn't have 2 gorgeous boys that were a billion times more important than a silly 'ol website. That sounded fake didn't it? Well the truth is, my darling boys won't ever leave me alone for 2 seconds. I love them. Feel the love. But I am struggling to remain sane after 7 years of not having any time to create and make and design. Shescrafty.com has been bigger than I ever thought it would be and I love it immensely still. I just can't manage to sell the actual knits anymore. This was a huge decision for me because it is the first time in my life I have to turn down work. I have decided to continue designing patterns. It's basically keeping me busy and I'm still in the game. I still have excuses to go buy more yarn. Not making the knits anymore has actually been really freeing. I can now venture off and design other things and I'm not limited to the sad selection of yarn here in New Zealand. But that is another story...

I have just finished a new girls beret pattern that I finally got to see on a real live girl last week when Jasper's friend Edie came over to play. I love this veregated perendale from my stash and I think Edie looks quite cute in her new hat. This is what I can do now. I can knit with other wools. It is a whole new exciting world!

Like most of my patterns it is knit with a semi-worsted wool. Now I need some testers! Anyone out there want to to be a beta knitter for me? Pretty please?

Ah, I know all to well having 2 boys of my own that there is a desperate shortage of cool knitting projects for people who are NOT, I repeat NOT, into dolls. Download this lovely and (yey) free pattern available at xtreme knitting. Knit 3 ferocious little dinosaurs with all those lovely bits of yarn you have stashed away. This little triceratops was knit by Grumperina. They each take one ball of specified yarn so they are a great one ball project a good way make use of all those bits of yarn that are too good to throw away. Grrrrrrr!

Knit and Tonic is a great source of patterns for girls as well as a little something for the ladies. I am in love with the Girlfriend's Swing Coat Sweater Pattern which is totally customizable by adding georgous closures, picot edge or a ribbon trim sewn onto the collar edge. The site suggests the following materials: Blue Sky Alpacas, Inc. Blue Sky Cotton, 3 hanks (3, 4, 5, 6). The Blue Sky Alpacas, Inc. Organic Cotton would be a good substitute. Karabella's Aurora 8 would also work, if you're looking for more warmth. This is a lovely pattern that is quick to knit and fun to add your own style to. More photos at Knit and Tonic.

The 10 minute tank is a great little project that has tons of variations and won't take more than a couple of days max. Shescrafty.com has been featured in a new book, The Global Shopper by Nicole Hopkinson. Currently, this handy little book is only available in Australia and well worth the postage. The Global Shopper is chocked full of well chosen websites from around the globe. One of my new favorite baby knit sites I discoverd in the book is neopolita.com, which knits "soft serve" hats for babies in 15 flavors including banana split, chocolate chip and of course, neopolitan. The hats look so soft and cuddly and dare I say, yummy!

Welcome. This blog is something that I have been wanting to add to the shescrafty.com site for quite some time now. Shescrafty.com has been a labor of love for me for the last 4 years and reciently, I have made the hard decision to stop selling knitwear and to focus on pattern making and doing more knitting myself. You would think that having a knitwear business would mean I am constantly knitting but in fact, I hardly ever have time! This new decision brings me closer to the original idea of shescrafty which was all about seeking inspiration to create.

It just so happens I have a love for creating knitwear for babies and toddlers. It is hard to say what exactly it does for me but now that my baby boys are getting bigger, I realize just how short sweet babyhood lasts. I love the texture of knits and the amazing variety of yarns to create with. I also love the warmth that wool brings to the skin. I love the timeless look of a plump baby dressed snugly in a hand knit cardigan and hat. I love little chubby toddler hands filling out woolly mittens. There is beautiful simplicity in vintage designs and I am always inspired by them.

My new vision for shecrafty.com is to continue to design patterns that will be available on the website for PDF download. I am hoping to add other designers to the shescrafty site as well as feature acts of inspiration for those of us who love to knit and create for babies. I will be adding knitting kits including the amazing organic merino wool that our garments are knit with. I will also be selling vintage pattern books from my growing collection. If you are interested in shopping for our baby knits some items are still available until stocks run out.
